10 Tips On How To Write Wedding Vows In Singapore

Are you preparing to say “I do” in beautiful Singapore? Crafting personal wedding vows is a beautiful and romantic way to express your love during the wedding ceremony.

Your wedding vows are a heartfelt promise to your partner, a chance to speak from the heart, and a meaningful addition to your special day.

In this guide, we’ll explore the art of writing wedding vows, providing tips and inspiration to help you create your vows in your own words, making your wedding ceremony truly personal and unforgettable.

1. Reflect On Your Relationship

One of the most vital aspects of writing heartfelt wedding vows is reflecting on your relationship. Think back to where your journey together began—the first impressions, the moments that made your hearts flutter, and the adventures you’ve shared. Your wedding vows should be a beautiful continuation of your story.

Start by reminiscing about the unique aspects of your relationship. What drew you together? What keeps your relationship alive and thriving? How did your relationship start, and how has it grown since then? These reflections will serve as a foundation for your wedding vows, allowing you to express the essence of your love.

2. Avoid Too Much Humour

While laughter is the spice of life and an essential ingredient for a happy marriage, it’s important to strike a balance when writing your wedding vows. While a touch of humour can be endearing, inside jokes may overshadow the moment’s significance.

Your wedding ceremony is a beautiful celebration of your love and commitment, and your vows should reflect the solemnity of this occasion. Personal anecdotes can add warmth and relatability to your vows. Too many inside jokes or overly humorous content might unintentionally minimise the depth of your promises to each other.

Instead, aim for a balanced approach. A well-placed light-hearted moment or a subtle touch of humour can bring smiles and warmth to your ceremony.

3. Keep Your Audience In Mind

When writing your wedding vows, it’s essential to consider your audience. Your vows are not just a private exchange between you and your partner; they are a moment shared with friends and family members who have gathered to witness your marriage ceremony.

Keeping your audience in mind ensures that your vows resonate with everyone present and enhance the overall experience.

To strike the right balance, avoid overly personal references or inside jokes that might leave some guests feeling excluded. Instead, opt for universal themes and sentiments that all can appreciate.

For example, express your gratitude for the support of your families and friends, or share your excitement about the journey of life and laughter that lies ahead.

4. Acknowledge The Challenges

When crafting your wedding vows, it’s essential to acknowledge the challenges that may arise in your marriage.

While romantic wedding vows often focus on love and happiness, it’s equally important to address the commitment to stand by each other through thick and thin. By doing so, you’re making promises for the beautiful moments and the inevitable hurdles life may throw your way.

Including a nod to the challenges can strengthen the authenticity of your wedding vows. It shows that you’re entering this marriage with your eyes wide open, fully aware that there will be times of difficulty.

For example, you might say, ‘I promise to love you unconditionally, not only in our moments of joy and triumph but even more so in our times of trials and uncertainty. I vow to stand beside you when the path gets rocky, to lift you up when you falter, and to face every challenge with the strength of our shared love.’

This acknowledgement signifies your commitment to support and cherish your partner, no matter what life brings. It’s a powerful testament to your dedication to becoming the best versions of yourselves as a couple and a promise to laugh together, share happiness, and navigate through the twists and turns of life as one.

5. Avoid Too Much Complexity In Your Vows

While expressing your love and commitment in your wedding vows is important, it’s equally crucial to keep your words accessible and relatable. Remember that your vows are a heartfelt promise to your partner, your family, and your friends gathered to celebrate your special day.

Overly complex language can make it challenging for your audience to connect with the sentiments you’re trying to convey.

For instance, instead of saying, ‘My affection for you is as boundless as the stars in the cosmos, ever-expanding and infinite in its scope,’ you can say, ‘I love you more and more each day, with a love that feels endless and true.’

Avoid metaphors that might confuse your audience. Instead, focus on expressing your love, hopes for the future, and commitment to being your best partner and spouse.

6. Practise Your Vows In Front Of The Mirror

Writing your wedding vows is one thing, but delivering them with confidence and emotion on your wedding day is another. That’s where practice comes in, and practising in front of a mirror can be a game-changer.

When you practise your vows in front of the mirror, you see your facial expressions, body language, and the emotions in your eyes as you speak. It helps you connect with the depth of your feelings and ensures that your delivery feels natural and heartfelt.

Start by reading your written vows aloud. As you do, pay attention to your pacing and intonation. Practise until you can recite your vows without stumbling or feeling overly nervous. Remember, your vows declare love and commitment, and you want to convey them sincerely.

Practising in front of the mirror also allows you to make eye contact with yourself, simulating the eye contact you’ll have with your partner during the ceremony. This can help you feel more comfortable and confident when you say your vows in front of your loved ones.

7. Don’t Make It Too Long

While you want to express your love and commitment, you don’t want your vows to become a lengthy monologue. Keeping your vows concise ensures that your audience remains engaged and that your message comes across clearly and memorably.

Aim for a perfect length that conveys your emotions without overwhelming your listeners. One to two minutes of speaking time is ideal for wedding vows. This allows you to share your feelings, promises, and love story without interrupting the ceremony.

Remember that your vows are a heartfelt promise to your life partner, a pledge to be there through the joys and tough times. Concise vows are easier to remember, which is especially important when you’re speaking from the heart.

8. Write And Rewrite

Crafting your wedding vows is a deeply personal and meaningful process. One essential tip for creating the perfect vows is to embrace the art of writing and rewriting.

Start by pouring your heart onto paper. Write your thoughts, feelings, and promises to your partner without worrying about perfection. Let your words flow naturally and authentically.

Once you’ve written your initial draft, take the time to revise and refine it. Read your vows aloud to see how they sound. Look for opportunities to make your expressions of love and commitment even more heartfelt and clear. Consider the pacing of your vows and how they fit within the context of your wedding ceremony.

9. Seek Inspiration From Your Favourite Quotes

When writing your wedding vows, seeking inspiration from various sources can be incredibly helpful. Consider turning to quotations, literature, and personal experiences to infuse your vows with depth and emotion.

Start by exploring famous quotations about love and marriage. These timeless words of wisdom can provide insight into expressing your feelings. Look for lines from literature, poetry, or songs that resonate with your relationship. Incorporating these elements can add a touch of elegance and sentimentality to your vows.

Additionally, draw inspiration from your own experiences. Recall the moments that made you laugh, the times that brought you happiness, and the challenges that strengthened your bond. Use these memories to craft vows that reflect your unique journey.

10. End With A Strong Promise

As you compose your wedding vows, concluding with a powerful promise is crucial. This promise is the heart of your vows, the pledge that encapsulates your unwavering commitment to your partner and your shared journey in life.

Your promise should be sincere, heartfelt, and meaningful. It’s when you declare your intention to love, cherish, and support your soul mate through life’s joys and challenges. Use clear and concise language, and ensure your promise aligns with the sentiments expressed in the rest of your vows.

Consider including traditional vows such as “in sickness and in health,” or “till death do us part” or crafting a unique promise that reflects your love story and aspirations. Your promise is the essence of your wedding vows, and it should leave no doubt in your partner’s mind about your dedication and devotion.

Examples Of Beautiful Wedding Vows For Your Wedding In Singapore

Drawing inspiration from some of the most touching and memorable vows in film and literature, these examples will help you find the perfect words to express your love and commitment on your special day.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine – Jake And Amy’s Wedding Vows

The wedding vows shared by Jake and Amy in the popular series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” offer an exquisite template for couples seeking to blend sincerity, humour and personal growth in their wedding vows..

Amy’s vow, “I love how kind, patient, and always honest you are,” is a beautiful example of acknowledging and cherishing the qualities in your partner that make your relationship strong. For couples crafting their vows, this line serves as a reminder to celebrate the specific traits in each other that have deepened their bond.

Amy highlights the foundation of a lasting relationship by focusing on qualities like kindness, patience, and honesty. Couples can draw inspiration from this by expressing gratitude for the characteristics of their partner that have been pivotal in their journey together.

Jake’s humorous yet heartfelt vow, “I love you, and I’m worried about dancing in front of our friends,” is a perfect example of how incorporating humour can add a unique and personal touch to wedding vows.

It shows that vows don’t always have to be solemn; they can reflect your relationship’s lighter, more playful aspects. This approach can be particularly endearing, making the vows promise to love and reflect the joy and fun you share.

Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Pt. 1 – Edward Cullen And Bella Swan’s Wedding Vows

The wedding vows exchanged between Edward and Bella in “Breaking Dawn Part 1” of the “Twilight Saga” are a profound reflection of eternal love and commitment, making them a compelling source of inspiration for couples crafting their wedding vows.

Edward’s vow, “No measure of time with you will be long enough, but let’s start with forever,” is a deeply romantic expression of everlasting love. This line is a perfect example for couples looking to incorporate a sense of timeless devotion in their vows.

It suggests that even a lifetime is not enough to encapsulate the depth of their love. This sentiment is ideal for couples who feel their love is a never-ending journey that will continue to grow and evolve beyond time constraints.

Bella’s response, “I promise to love you every moment, forever,” complements this sentiment beautifully, emphasising a continuous and unwavering commitment.

This vow can inspire couples to express a promise of constant love, regardless of the challenges or changes that life may bring. It’s a pledge to cherish each moment together and to nurture their love through every phase of life.

Pride And Prejudice – Mr. Darcy’s Vows

Mr. Darcy’s profound declaration of love to Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” is a timeless example of wedding vows that beautifully combine deep emotion, transformative love, and personal growth.

His words, “You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on,” resonate with the power of a love that changes and uplifts, making them a perfect inspiration for couples crafting their vows.

For couples, this vow can be a guide to expressing the profound impact their partner has had on their life. Mr Darcy’s acknowledgement of being ‘bewitched’ reflects a transformative love that has fundamentally changed his perspective and softened his character.

Grey’s Anatomy – Meredith Grey And Derek Shepherd’s Post-It Wedding

The wedding vows of Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd from “Grey’s Anatomy,” with their blend of raw honesty, humour, and deep commitment, offer a unique and realistic inspiration for modern couples crafting their wedding vows.

“To love each other, even when we hate each other. No running—ever. Nobody walks out no matter what happens. Take care when old, senile, smelly. This is forever,” is a genuine reflection of a partnership that acknowledges the full spectrum of marital life.

Friends – Monica And Chandler’s Wedding Vows

The wedding vows of Monica and Chandler from friends reflect a touching narrative of how love can unexpectedly evolve, making them a perfect inspiration for couples with similar journeys.

Monica’s vow, “For so long I wondered if I would ever find my prince, my soulmate. Then, three years ago, at another wedding, I turned to a friend for comfort. And instead, I found everything that I’d ever been looking for my whole life,” is a reminder that sometimes the most significant relationships begin as friendships.

For couples with a similar story, this vow is an exquisite way to acknowledge the journey from being friends to life partners. It emphasises that the best romantic relationships can be those rooted in a strong friendship, where the partner is not just a lover but also a soulmate and a friend.

Chandler’s vow, “I thought this was going to be the most difficult thing I ever had to do. But when I saw you walking down the aisle, I realised how simple it was. I love you,” reflects a transformation from apprehension to clarity in love.

This is particularly resonant for those who may have had doubts or fears about love but found comfort and certainty in their relationship.

The Vow – Paige And Leo’s Wedding Vows

Paige’s vow, “I vow to help you love life, to always hold you with tenderness and to have the patience that love demands. To speak when words are needed and to share the silence when they are not,” provides a template for expressing a commitment to be a nurturing and understanding partner.

This vow can inspire couples to promise to support each other not just in times of joy but also in silence and patience, recognising that love is as much about the unspoken moments as it is about the spoken ones.

Leo’s vow, “I vow to fiercely love you in all your forms, now and forever. I promise to never forget this is a once-in-a-lifetime love,” is a powerful example of declaring unwavering love and commitment.

This can inspire couples to acknowledge the uniqueness and irreplaceability of their bond in their vows, emphasising a resilient love that is adaptable to all of life’s changes and challenges. His promise to remember the rarity of their love is a beautiful way to express how special and unique their connection is.

When Harry Met Sally – Harry And Sally’s Vows

Harry’s heartfelt proclamation to Sally in “When Harry Met Sally” can be a model for couples looking to craft wedding vows that celebrate their relationship’s unique, everyday aspects.

His words highlight the beauty in the small, often overlooked details that make a partnership special, making it a perfect inspiration for personalised and meaningful wedding vows.

Harry’s approach to expressing his love for Sally, focusing on the little quirks and details like getting cold at 71 degrees or the time it takes her to order a sandwich, encourages couples to celebrate the peculiarities and quirks that make their partner who they are.

This level of detail in wedding vows can create a deeply personal and intimate moment, highlighting the appreciation of the other person’s uniqueness. It invites couples to reflect on and articulate those small, endearing traits that have brought them together.

Furthermore, the line, “I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes,” is a poetic way of expressing how deeply one’s partner has become a part of one’s life. It’s a metaphor for their lasting impact on each other’s lives, a beautiful sentiment for wedding vows.

Money Talks: Is a wedding planner a luxury you don’t need for your big day?

Should you splash out on your wedding? (Photo: iStock)
Weddings are a once-in-a-lifetime event that can be a source of great joy and stress. On the limited series “Am I Adulting Right”, CNA’s Elizabeth Neo speaks to Hellen Lie, creative director at Rosette Designs & Co, on how to navigate tricky money discussions for a happily ever after.

SINGAPORE: From grooms shouting at vendors, to couples breaking up just one week before their big day, wedding planner Hellen Lie has seen how the stress of planning this once-in-a-lifetime event can get to people. “Sometimes (wedding couples) expect their friends to help them but the friends also get worked up”, Lie told CNA’s Elizabeth Neo in an episode of the Money Talks podcast.

Her advice to couples? “Don’t scrimp on the wedding coordinator to run the actual day.” A wedding planner, on the other hand, is not always necessary. Having a wedding planner is a luxury, not a necessity. “Only maybe 10 per cent of couples have a wedding planner. If you’re very busy and don’t mind spending … you will definitely have a different outcome and guest experience”, says Lie. She also talks about managing costs and expectations. Here are some highlights from the conversation: ON PLANNING HER OWN WEDDING IN 2010 Lie: “I held my wedding over two days … There was an outdoor solemnisation and lunch buffet at Fort Canning Park for 100 people, and a ballroom dinner at Conrad Hotel for 220 people.”

“We spent about S$80,000 (US$60,200) for both events.” If we had to do it all over again in the current economy, we would be spending 40 per cent more. SMALL WEDDINGS HAVE BECOME MORE ACCEPTABLE POST-PANDEMIC Lie: “COVID-19 has changed perspectives on weddings. In the past, most weddings happened in hotels … and were mainly (to) invite the relatives. Now, couples have become more mindful of the number of guests they want to invite.” “It’s no longer taboo to have a wedding of 20 (people).” WATCH THAT VENUE COST Lie: “40 per cent of your wedding budget will be (spent) on the venue. A hotel wedding is (minimally) S$50,000. Some couples spend more than S$100,000 to S$250,000 for a hotel wedding.” Lie: “If you have the expectation that your guests will help cover the (cost in their red packets), that will jeopardise your friendship. It’s best not to have any expectations.” The hotel wedding rate is S$120 to S$360 per person, she says. I’m for following the ang pow (red packet) rates, but if it’s not within your means, just give what you want. SHOULD YOU TAKE A LOAN TO FINANCE YOUR WEDDING? Lie: “You don’t want to start your marriage with debt. Spend within your means and have a conversation on how much you’re willing to fork out. You must also think about housing and your (future) children.”

Couple wows with ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ wedding in Singapore

Birds of paradise flowers, the bride’s favourite, feature prominently in the wedding decor. PHOTO: COURTESY OF MARY
Roll out the red carpet for the couple with love in their hearts and stars in their eyes.

Mary said that what inspired the couple the most were the colourful palette and birds of paradise flowers, the bride’s favourite, that feature prominently in the wedding decor.

In her video, she shared the gorgeous flower arrangements. The floral arch and blooms that lined the aisle were reminiscent of those that embellished Araminta and Colin’s wedding venue in the film.

Their wedding ceremony, which took place on June 18, also had live performances and guests arrived all glammed up according to the dress code.

Like stars at a movie premiere, they posed for pictures on the red carpet before entering the venue.

The dress code for male guests was the barong tagalog, a national costume from the Philippines, which Mary described as “an elegant hybrid of Filipino and Spanish clothing styles”. Many women wore colourful formal tea-length dresses.

Guests dined over candlelit tables under the colossal solar-powered Supertrees, which tower over 50m high. A lion dance and a ribbon dance provided entertainment as they ate and mingled. In line with the movie theme, the couple also invited a jazz singer to perform.

A painter captured the night on canvas as well.

The couple spent eight months planning the event with local wedding planner Rosette Designs & Co, time and effort spent well as Mary said that her sister’s wedding was the “talk of the town”.

She said, “Guests who flew in from the Philippines, Australia, and the United States are calling it the wedding of the century in the Philippines.

“Surely the aunties will be gossiping about it just like they did in the movie.”

Crazy Rich asian nuptial bliss: filipino couple holds extravagant $250K wedding at Gardens by the bay

PHOTO: RR Production
Who remembers the glitz and glamour of Crazy Rich Asians? The plot might be good, but Singapore, which acted as the backdrop of the film, stole the limelight with its lip-smacking food and swanky locales.

And one Filipino couple decided to recreate the opulence of the romantic comedy film for their big day, taking inspiration from the lavish wedding reception scene, which was set in Gardens by the Bay.

The sister of the bride, Mary, took to TikTok to share snippets of the grand affair yesterday (June 20). And boy, was it a Crazy Rich Asians wedding.

Speaking to AsiaOne, Mary shares with us the inspiration for the wedding of JM Tiongco, 26, and Abbie Caram, 31. The couple, who are in the real estate business, tied the knot on June 18.

“Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians is our family’s comfort movie. Aside from it, the colourful palette, concept, and flowers from the movie really inspired the bride [her sister, Tiongco] to turn her dream wedding into reality in Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay,” Mary explained.

In the 21-second TikTok video, you can see the manicured floral arch complete with accompanying arrangements lining along the aisle.

There was even a red carpet backdrop that was inspired by the movie poster. A perfect photo op for guests and family members to showcase their stylish wedding fits.

Come evening, the wedding venue was glowing, from the candlelit tables to the flashing iridescent lights from the nearby Supertrees.

And not to mention the majestic Marina Bay Sands towering over the area adds a nice little touch of elegance.

The wedding festivities continued with a lively lion dance performance and a colourful Chinese dance showcase.

Undoubtedly though, the real star of the show was the lucky couple – with the bride cladded in a stunning Vera Wong gown while the groom donned a custom-dyed pina barong suit by Filipino designer AJ Javier.

Mary also added that there was a jazz singer and a live painter at the wedding as part of the festivities.

Netizens’ reactions The comments section was filled with admiration from netizens. Most were in awe at the grandeur of the themed wedding.
