10 Destination Wedding Etiquette For Your Dream Ceremony

Are you planning a destination wedding? It’s essential to know the right etiquette to ensure a smooth celebration. Proper etiquette helps avoid misunderstandings, maintains good relationships, and ensures everyone enjoys the day in a beautiful setting.

Clarity about who pays for travel and accommodations can prevent uncomfortable misunderstandings. Setting clear expectations about who can and cannot join the trip can also help manage guest lists and ensure everyone involved is on the same page.

Here are some essential destination wedding etiquette tips to take note of to ensure your special day runs smoothly. By understanding these key points, you can plan a memorable and stress-free celebration that resonates with the local charm of your chosen destination.

1. Who Foots The Bill For A Dreamy Destination Wedding?

When it’s about getting married in a dream destination, the question of who pays for the destination wedding becomes essential.

Most couples take on the delightful yet significant task of covering not just the wedding day essentials – think welcome party, rehearsal dinner and the main reception – but also charming activities that make the celebration memorable.

Picture this: your guests basking in the joy of a wine tasting or a scenic tour, all arranged by you. It’s these details that turn a great wedding into an unforgettable one.

While the bride and groom usually don’t cover accommodation costs for all guests, hosting bridesmaids and groomsmen is thoughtful.

It’s important to clearly communicate to your guests that they are expected to pay for their flights and accommodation. This transparency helps manage expectations and ensures everyone contributes to the festive spirit simply by being there.

If some families can’t afford the trip, consider helping them. After all, their presence is priceless. And remember, little touches go a long way.

2. How To Select A Perfect Wedding Destination?

Selecting the appropriate venue is a critical aspect of good destination wedding etiquette. While a remote beach or a village might be your dream location, as a considerate host, it’s important to consider the journey your guests will undertake to join your celebration.

Accessibility is key. Before you fall for a beautiful but distant locale, ponder the travel logistics. Opting for an affordable venue that’s easier to reach can significantly uplift the guest experience and ensure a higher turnout.

If you’re set on a location that is remote or less accessible, make sure to communicate this clearly with your potential guests.

This allows them to make decisions and arrangements. Keep in mind, while your wedding is about you and your partner getting married, it’s also a celebration with family and friends. Their comfort and ability to attend should be part of your considerations.

Offer a range of stay options in your dream wedding venue, look for group discounts and greet them with a thoughtful welcome hamper. It’s about making everyone feel cherished as they attend and celebrate your special day!

3. Craft An Ideal Timeline Of Activities

When planning your destination wedding, an exact timeline is not just courteous, it’s a must. As travel plays a significant role in destination weddings, giving your guests a clear and early heads-up allows them to arrange time off, budget accordingly and ensure they’re there to celebrate your union.

Send save-the-dates 8 to 6 months prior, including all the essential details like exact dates and location specifics. This early notice is a key part of destination wedding etiquette, showing consideration for everyone’s time and financial planning.

As the big day approaches, send out formal invitations 4 to 3 months in advance, detailing transportation, accommodation and the itinerary of events. Remember, guests need ample time to RSVP as they’re coordinating more than just an outfit – they’re arranging an entire trip!

Also, take into account any time zone differences. If they’re significant, advise guests to arrive a day or two early to acclimate. By providing a clear, considerate timeline, you’re not just planning a wedding, you’re curating a stress-free, enjoyable experience for your nearest and dearest.

4. Hire A Local Wedding Planner

A professional wedding planner turns your wedding vision into reality. While wedding planners alleviate stress and handle details, in destination weddings, they also manage complex aspects like travel, local vendors, and guest logistics.

Choosing someone with a strong track record in destination weddings and who shares your enthusiasm is crucial. Rosette Designs is committed to providing seamless wedding planning and execution through full wedding planning package or the wedding coordination services.

5. Provide A Wedding Welcome Gift For Your Guests

A thoughtful gift is a delightful way to kick off your destination wedding celebrations, instantly making guests feel welcome and valued, amping up excitement  for the events ahead. A small gift after a long and exhausting trip can make all the difference.

Consider packing a mix of practical and local treats – a handwritten note expressing your gratitude, some refreshing water bottles and perhaps a selection of local snacks or a bottle of regional wine.

But why stop there? Add a personal touch with craft beer, baked goods or drink vouchers for the hotel bar.

And while guests are covering their travel and accommodation for your special day, they will likely be bringing gifts to celebrate your union.

6. Inform Your Guests To Any Safety Risks On Your Wedding Location

As you plan your dream destination wedding, remember that safety comes first, especially in unfamiliar territories. As part of your etiquette plan, informing your guests of any potential hazards or safety concerns associated with your chosen destination is crucial.

Given the unique elements of your destination, it’s essential to ensure that all guests are well-informed. Consider providing a letter or a safety pamphlet in the welcome gift, outlining essential information such as recommended vaccinations and local emergency numbers.

This approach ensures that all guests have easy access to important safety details, contributing to a well-prepared and enjoyable experience.

For instance, if your wedding is set on a gorgeous but remote beach, make guests aware of strong currents or specific times when swimming might be risky. If you’re in a bustling city, point out areas to avoid after dark or provide advice on keeping valuables safe.

7. Consider Ways To Include Those Who Can’t Attend

Destination weddings might be your dream come true, but not all your loved ones might be able to make it. However, with a sprinkle of creativity and a dash of technology, you can ensure they still feel a part of your special day.

Social media is a great way to connect everyone with your destination wedding. Create a unique wedding hashtag for guests to follow with all the festivities on their feeds. As an added touch, consider live streaming your ceremony, allowing those who couldn’t make it to witness your vows in real time.

If you want to go the extra mile, setting up a wedding website to document your journey, from engagement photos to after-wedding event updates, can be a wonderful addition.

Involve them in the planning stages, too. Maybe they can’t travel, but their insights and well-wishes can still be a part of your celebration. Ask for their advice on your dress, menu or decorations.

On the big day, take a moment to video call those special people – a heartfelt gesture showing that, no matter the miles, they’re with you as you step into this new chapter.

8. Offer Accommodation Choices For Every Guest

To ensure your guests feel comfortable, offer a variety of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets.

Organise hotel blocks in a range of price categories – budget-friendly, mid-range and luxury – well in advance, giving your guests the freedom to choose what suits them best. This thoughtful approach allows everyone to enjoy the celebration without financial stress.

Beyond hotels, consider alternative accommodations like charming bed and breakfasts, boutique inns or even local vacation rentals for families and groups wanting a more homely stay. Ensure all options are clearly listed on your wedding invitations or your wedding pamphlet if you opt to have one.

The list should also come complete with pricing, proximity to your wedding venue, and a brief description of available amenities.

To further ease their experience, arrange transportation to and from the wedding events for each accommodation choice. Remember, the more options and information you provide, the more your guests will be able to prepare and feel excited about attending your special day.

9. Who Should You Invite To Have An Intimate Wedding?

When planning a destination wedding, the size and composition of your guest list is more important than if you were having a regular wedding. We recommend keeping your circle intimate, focusing on close friends and family.

But who makes the cut? Consider those whose presence would make your day significantly more meaningful. If the thought of not having someone there leaves you with a sense of loss, they belong on your guest list.

So, think carefully, choose wisely and remember that a smaller, more personal celebration often leads to the most cherished memories and experiences for you and your guests.

10. Consider Offering Transportation For Your Guests

Ensuring seamless transportation for your guests is a cornerstone of destination wedding etiquette. As your guests are far from home, providing a comfortable and hassle-free travel experience to and from the venue speaks volumes of your thoughtfulness.

Leverage your resources and knowledge of the location to arrange transportation—this could mean hiring vans or limos to shuttle guests from the airport to their accommodations and then to the wedding venue.

Consider elevating the experience by employing a local guide who can offer interesting tidbits about the area during the ride. It allows guests to engage and ask questions, turning a simple transfer into an enriching experience.

A personal touch, such as a welcome sign in the transportation, adds a warm and inviting vibe, making guests feel appreciated and excited about the celebrations ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions About Destination Wedding Etiquette

You should allocate your budget by covering essentials like the venue, accommodations and local vendors, keeping in mind the currency exchange rates.

There are also travel costs to take into account for key family members or bridal parties, ensuring you have a separate contingency fund for unexpected expenses related to the destination’s specific requirements or emergencies.

How Can We Authentically Incorporate Local Cultural Elements Into Our Wedding?

To incorporate local culture authentically, plan to collaborate with local artisans for decor, include regional cuisine in the menu and perhaps incorporate a local tradition into the ceremony.

You can consult with cultural experts or local friends to ensure incorporation is respectful and adds a meaningful dimension to your wedding.

Should I Plan Group Activities For Guests Outside Of The Wedding Events?

Yes, you can organise group activities like a welcome dinner at a local spot, a guided tour of the area or a group excursion that highlights the destination’s unique features. This makes the experience more enjoyable and immersive for your guests and allows everyone to bond and create lasting memories together.

What’s The Appropriate Dress Code For A Destination Wedding?

If considering a beachfront venue, we suggest a ‘tropical chic’ dress code, encouraging lightweight fabrics and vibrant colours while advising on appropriate footwear for sand and sun.

Is It Necessary To Visit The Destination Before The Wedding?

Yes, visiting your chosen destination at least once before the wedding is crucial to scout venues, taste food options and meet with local vendors. This trip will also allow you to assess logistics firsthand, ensuring the location fits our vision and can comfortably accommodate your guests’ needs.

Money Talks: Is a wedding planner a luxury you don’t need for your big day?

Should you splash out on your wedding? (Photo: iStock)
Weddings are a once-in-a-lifetime event that can be a source of great joy and stress. On the limited series “Am I Adulting Right”, CNA’s Elizabeth Neo speaks to Hellen Lie, creative director at Rosette Designs & Co, on how to navigate tricky money discussions for a happily ever after.

SINGAPORE: From grooms shouting at vendors, to couples breaking up just one week before their big day, wedding planner Hellen Lie has seen how the stress of planning this once-in-a-lifetime event can get to people. “Sometimes (wedding couples) expect their friends to help them but the friends also get worked up”, Lie told CNA’s Elizabeth Neo in an episode of the Money Talks podcast.

Her advice to couples? “Don’t scrimp on the wedding coordinator to run the actual day.” A wedding planner, on the other hand, is not always necessary. Having a wedding planner is a luxury, not a necessity. “Only maybe 10 per cent of couples have a wedding planner. If you’re very busy and don’t mind spending … you will definitely have a different outcome and guest experience”, says Lie. She also talks about managing costs and expectations. Here are some highlights from the conversation: ON PLANNING HER OWN WEDDING IN 2010 Lie: “I held my wedding over two days … There was an outdoor solemnisation and lunch buffet at Fort Canning Park for 100 people, and a ballroom dinner at Conrad Hotel for 220 people.”

“We spent about S$80,000 (US$60,200) for both events.” If we had to do it all over again in the current economy, we would be spending 40 per cent more. SMALL WEDDINGS HAVE BECOME MORE ACCEPTABLE POST-PANDEMIC Lie: “COVID-19 has changed perspectives on weddings. In the past, most weddings happened in hotels … and were mainly (to) invite the relatives. Now, couples have become more mindful of the number of guests they want to invite.” “It’s no longer taboo to have a wedding of 20 (people).” WATCH THAT VENUE COST Lie: “40 per cent of your wedding budget will be (spent) on the venue. A hotel wedding is (minimally) S$50,000. Some couples spend more than S$100,000 to S$250,000 for a hotel wedding.” Lie: “If you have the expectation that your guests will help cover the (cost in their red packets), that will jeopardise your friendship. It’s best not to have any expectations.” The hotel wedding rate is S$120 to S$360 per person, she says. I’m for following the ang pow (red packet) rates, but if it’s not within your means, just give what you want. SHOULD YOU TAKE A LOAN TO FINANCE YOUR WEDDING? Lie: “You don’t want to start your marriage with debt. Spend within your means and have a conversation on how much you’re willing to fork out. You must also think about housing and your (future) children.”

Couple wows with ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ wedding in Singapore

Birds of paradise flowers, the bride’s favourite, feature prominently in the wedding decor. PHOTO: COURTESY OF MARY
Roll out the red carpet for the couple with love in their hearts and stars in their eyes.

Mary said that what inspired the couple the most were the colourful palette and birds of paradise flowers, the bride’s favourite, that feature prominently in the wedding decor.

In her video, she shared the gorgeous flower arrangements. The floral arch and blooms that lined the aisle were reminiscent of those that embellished Araminta and Colin’s wedding venue in the film.

Their wedding ceremony, which took place on June 18, also had live performances and guests arrived all glammed up according to the dress code.

Like stars at a movie premiere, they posed for pictures on the red carpet before entering the venue.

The dress code for male guests was the barong tagalog, a national costume from the Philippines, which Mary described as “an elegant hybrid of Filipino and Spanish clothing styles”. Many women wore colourful formal tea-length dresses.

Guests dined over candlelit tables under the colossal solar-powered Supertrees, which tower over 50m high. A lion dance and a ribbon dance provided entertainment as they ate and mingled. In line with the movie theme, the couple also invited a jazz singer to perform.

A painter captured the night on canvas as well.

The couple spent eight months planning the event with local wedding planner Rosette Designs & Co, time and effort spent well as Mary said that her sister’s wedding was the “talk of the town”.

She said, “Guests who flew in from the Philippines, Australia, and the United States are calling it the wedding of the century in the Philippines.

“Surely the aunties will be gossiping about it just like they did in the movie.”

Crazy Rich asian nuptial bliss: filipino couple holds extravagant $250K wedding at Gardens by the bay

PHOTO: RR Production
Who remembers the glitz and glamour of Crazy Rich Asians? The plot might be good, but Singapore, which acted as the backdrop of the film, stole the limelight with its lip-smacking food and swanky locales.

And one Filipino couple decided to recreate the opulence of the romantic comedy film for their big day, taking inspiration from the lavish wedding reception scene, which was set in Gardens by the Bay.

The sister of the bride, Mary, took to TikTok to share snippets of the grand affair yesterday (June 20). And boy, was it a Crazy Rich Asians wedding.

Speaking to AsiaOne, Mary shares with us the inspiration for the wedding of JM Tiongco, 26, and Abbie Caram, 31. The couple, who are in the real estate business, tied the knot on June 18.

“Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians is our family’s comfort movie. Aside from it, the colourful palette, concept, and flowers from the movie really inspired the bride [her sister, Tiongco] to turn her dream wedding into reality in Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay,” Mary explained.

In the 21-second TikTok video, you can see the manicured floral arch complete with accompanying arrangements lining along the aisle.

There was even a red carpet backdrop that was inspired by the movie poster. A perfect photo op for guests and family members to showcase their stylish wedding fits.

Come evening, the wedding venue was glowing, from the candlelit tables to the flashing iridescent lights from the nearby Supertrees.

And not to mention the majestic Marina Bay Sands towering over the area adds a nice little touch of elegance.

The wedding festivities continued with a lively lion dance performance and a colourful Chinese dance showcase.

Undoubtedly though, the real star of the show was the lucky couple – with the bride cladded in a stunning Vera Wong gown while the groom donned a custom-dyed pina barong suit by Filipino designer AJ Javier.

Mary also added that there was a jazz singer and a live painter at the wedding as part of the festivities.

Netizens’ reactions The comments section was filled with admiration from netizens. Most were in awe at the grandeur of the themed wedding.
