Planning a wedding is easily one of the most exciting seasons of your life.
You are stepping into a beautiful new chapter together, dreaming up how your day will look, and choosing the details that show who you are as a couple. Whether you are imagining an intimate gathering at a sun-lit restaurant in Dempsey or a stunning celebration in an Orchard Road ballroom, the early days of planning are filled with so much joy and anticipation.
But let’s be completely honest for a moment. As you begin putting numbers down on paper, it is incredibly easy to feel a little overwhelmed by the financial side of things.
Most couples we chat with, start their journey by looking at the big, obvious numbers. They will budget for the venue’s per-table cost, the main photography package, and the bridal gown.
However, after years of wedding planning alongside couples in Singapore, we have seen how the smaller, unannounced expenses can quietly add up. These are the details that don’t always show up on the initial brochure but can suddenly stretch your budget if you aren’t prepared for them.
We always tell our couples that a beautiful wedding isn’t about how much you spend, but how intentionally you plan. Hence, knowing about these hidden wedding costs will provide you with an ultimate peace of mind.
When your budget is grounded and clear, you can focus entirely on the love story you are celebrating and the beautiful marriage you are building.
Let’s look at ten hidden wedding costs you should keep on your radar so your planning journey remains completely stress-free and joyful.
1. The Reality of the “Plus-Plus” (GST and Service Charge)
When you receive initial quotes from hotels, restaurants, or caterers, the prices are almost always listed with those two little plus signs at the end. In Singapore, that means a 10% service charge followed by the prevailing 9% GST.
While it looks small on paper, it makes a massive difference to your final bill. If your ballroom banquet costs $40,000 before taxes, the service charge and GST will add nearly $8,000 to your final invoice.
We always recommend calculating the net price right from the start. Whenever you look at a package, multiply the base rate by 1.199. This simple habit keeps your math entirely accurate and prevents any unexpected shocks when the final payment drops.
2. Early Morning Surcharges for Your Day-Of Team
In Singapore, wedding days often start before the sun even comes up. Between auspicious timings for your gatecrash, family tea ceremonies, and morning church services, your hair and makeup artist might need to knock on your door as early as 4:00 AM.
Most makeup artists, wedding coordinators, videographers and photographers charge an early morning surcharge for bookings before 7:00 AM. This is usually an hourly rate to cover their early commute and extra effort.
When you are planning your morning timeline, remember to ask your beauty, planning and media teams about these specific hours. Factoring this in early ensures you can budget for their surcharges without a worry.

3. Nourishing Your Hardworking Vendor Team
Your photographer, videographer, coordinators, and makeup artist are going to be on their feet for ten to twelve hours straight. They are working tirelessly behind the scenes to capture every tear, laughter, and special glance.
They are running around ensuring your day goes perfectly, hence they will need a proper meal to keep their energy up. It is standard practice to provide lunch or dinner for your main day-of vendors.
While you don’t need to sit them down at your guest tables for a formal course meal, it would be a good gesture to arrange bento boxes or vendor meals through your venue or an external caterer for the team. If you have a team of six to eight vendors, providing meals across the day can add a few hundred dollars to your expenses.
Hence, this is an additional cost that should be looked at and to budget for.
Take care of your wedding helper team, appreciate them for looking after you and your partner on your wedding day!
4. Corkage Fees and Alcohol Logistics
Many wedding packages come with a complimentary barrel of beer or a bottle of house wine per guaranteed table. As the evening rolls on and your friends start celebrating, you might find that you need to bring in more bottles of whiskey or specific vintages of wine to celebrate with the ones you love.
Do take note that most venues charge a corkage fee for every single bottle opened that wasn’t purchased directly from them. This fee can range from $30 to $50 per bottle of wine, and even higher for hard liquor and champagne.
If you know your crowd loves a good toast, talk to your venue coordinator about a flat-rate corkage waiver package or negotiate for a good price for in house alcohol purchased from the venue. It might cost a bit more upfront, but it allows your guests to celebrate freely without you worrying about every bottle opened.
5. Audio-Visual (AV) and Venue “Plug-In” Fees
Every couple wants their wedding to sound and look beautiful. You might be dreaming of a romantic fairy-light canopy, a gorgeous custom neon sign, or an incredible live band playing your favorite acoustic songs during dinner.
What surprises many couples is that venues often charge a “plug-in fee” if you bring in external AV equipment or lighting systems. This covers their internal technician fees and electricity usage.
Additionally, if you want to use the hotel’s grand LED wall instead of a standard projector screen, there is often an extra content formatting or rental charge. Be sure to ask your venue what is included in the basic sound system before finalizing your entertainment plans.

6. The Beautiful Elements of the Tea Ceremony and Angbaos
Multicultural weddings in Singapore are so incredibly special because they honor our roots and our families. The traditional Chinese tea ceremony or the Malay/Indian traditions of a wedding are profoundly moving moments where you receive blessings from your elders.
However, setting these up requires specific items. For example – for a Chinese wedding, you will need to budget for the traditional tea sets, auspicious red dates, longans, and the items for the Guo Da Li (betrothal gift exchange), which is an additional amount to budget for.
On top of that, you will need a separate pool of cash for token angbaos (red packets). These are given as gestures of appreciation to your bridal party, your gatecrash helpers, the drivers, and the vendors who go above and beyond. It is a beautiful local tradition that honors community, but it does require a dedicated cash layout on the day.
7. Gown Alterations and Post-Shoot Dry Cleaning
Finding your dream gown is an emotional, wonderful milestone. Most bridal boutique packages include basic alterations, but if you want to customize the lace, add delicate sleeves, or heavily adjust the hemline, you might face extra tailoring fees.
Don’t forget about the post-wedding or post-shoot care. If you are doing an outdoor pre-wedding shoot at the Singapore Botanic Gardens or along the rustic tracks of the Green Corridor, your gown will inevitably collect some dirt along the train.
Most boutiques require you to return the gown professionally dry-cleaned, or they will charge a dedicated cleaning fee if there are tough stains. Budgeting a small buffer for gown care keeps your dress experience completely magical.
8. Logistics, Courier Deliveries, and Late-Night Teardown Surcharges
A wedding involves moving a lot of physical items from one place to another.
You have your physical guestbook, custom photo displays, wedding favors, changes of outfits, and personal family items that need to reach the venue safely.
If you don’t have a dedicated friend with a spacious car, you will likely need to rely on yourselves or to get local courier services or van rentals to transport everything the day before.
For decor and floral teams like us, venues have very strict timelines for when everything must be moved in or cleared out. Early extensive set up for your lunch banquet that starts before 7am or the day before , or your dinner reception that wraps up after 11:00 PM, venues often impose a surcharge for an early set up or late-night teardown window. This requires vendors to work through the midnight hours, which comes with standard transport and night-shift surcharges.
9. Stationery Prints and Last-Minute RSVP Adjustments
We live in a wonderful digital age where e-invites are incredibly convenient. Still, it is a lovely and respectful gesture to print physical, gold-foiled invitation cards for your parents’ close friends and your older relatives.
Designing and printing these physical cards, along with purchasing local postage stamps, is a small but distinct cost.
Furthermore, guest lists are fluid. You might have a few guests who unfortunately have to drop out at the very last minute due to work or sudden travel changes. Because venues require your final headcount about two weeks in advance, you will still need to pay for those empty seats. Having a small financial cushion for these last-minute shifts keeps you calm and collected.

10. Post-Wedding Album Prints and Framing
The wedding day flies by in a beautiful flash of smiles and happy tears. Once the celebration wraps up and you return from your honeymoon, the excitement of receiving your actual-day photographs begins.
While most modern photography packages give you all the high-resolution digital files, there is something truly sentimental about holding a physical album or looking at printed photos framed up at your homes. Turning the pages together on your wedding anniversary is a beautiful tradition to start.
Printing a premium, linen-bound heirloom album or framing a gorgeous canvas print for your new home will be a separate post-wedding cost. Keeping a small portion of your budget set aside for this allows you to preserve your memories beautifully.
